North Laine Photography Gallery
We are Brighton's most popular independent gallery. Nestled in the heart of Brighton’s legendary North Laine, our Gallery is above the fantastic shopping world of Snoopers Paradise, Kensington Gdns.
North Laine Photography has earned a reputation for high quality images of Brighton and Hove alongside sponsoring new photographers in very diverse exhibitions. Often quoted as Brighton's favourite independent gallery, we stock a huge range of fantastic prints, to suit all budgets and taste, from the timeless and classic work of NK Swallow and Roger Bamber to the surreal world inhabited by resident eccentric 'Petrusco', via the acclaimed street cred of DarkDaze to the innovative Karen Neal and others.
Our collection is constantly being updated, and we continue to stock prints from previous exhibitions, so even if you didn't get to see the full exhibition you can still browse in the gallery and grab yourself a favourite image to hang at home.
At NLP we strive to follow the ethos laid down by founder member, MD and all round head honcho NK Swallow. Renowned for his iconic Brighton images, Nigel is most often cited as the photographer who 'captures the essence of Brighton and Hove', it is sales of these prints and the annual calendar that allowed NLP to fund 3 major competitions and host such an eclectic range of exhibitions by both established and up and coming photographers as well as assisting and exhibiting community projects.
The competition guaranteed large visitor numbers for new artists to a firm city favourite. Over 50,000 people came to see the 100ft long, 7ft tall "Peoples Gallery" in 2006. (featuring at least 1 image from each competition entrant). From this 4 deserving finalists, chosen by a select panel of judges and also voted for by the general public, were given 450sq ft of Gallery Space for 5-10wks each, plus technical assistance to 'do what they want with' from our in house studio. The result was some of the most talked about shows of the year, gaining critical acclaim and local and national press coverage often by first time exhibitors given the professional treatment by NLP.
For 6 years we ran as this 'not for profit' group. Our last sponsored finalist show by Sarah Boyes ended in October 2009. We are now winding down our operations, hoping to bring out a book on all we did, then closing NLP and leaving new management to move things forward under a new name.
The gallery can be found above the legendary shop 'Snoopers Paradise' down the narrow cobbled street that is Kensington Gardens, the gallery is a must for locals and visitors alike, unpretentious and welcoming, we are happy to answer questions and help in any way we can.
