Roger Bambers -UK at Home
Roger was one of fifty photographers commissioned to depict the ‘UK at
Home’ between 24th – 30th September 2007. Alongside this, the general public were simultaneously invited to submit entries , the results of which are the ‘UK at Home’ book.
(Copies signed by Roger are available from the gallery)
The exhibition shows his exceptional portfolio from that week as selected by Roger and NLP. (i.e not necessarily the images used in the book).
He photographed 2 commissioned subjects but found the others himself through friends and people he’d previously met on shoots.
He is renowned for finding a subject with a storyline and getting the maximum potential out of that subject matter, for images the national press have consistently used in a career spanning over 40 years.
(winning scores of major awards along the way and having been published in every national newspaper).
This commission was a perfect fit for his skills emphasising that in his 5th decade shooting photos professionally, Roger continues to be a master of his art. Ten of his images were used in the final ‘UK at Home’ book, whilst these and others from his weeks portfolio have been printed in the national press umpteen times already, (including double page spreads in ‘The Guardian’ and ‘The Times Magazine’).

DarkDaze
This exhibition was the second solo show from DarkDaze at NLP. From his first expo in 2005, this artist has courted controversy, worked for international clients, appeared in London expos with one of NYC’s finest photographers, and lived on a diet of bread and hummus whilst his fridge remained full of Polaroid film. This time DarkDaze exhibited a photographers cut, The Collection, pulled from the past 5 years it included images from New York, the Graffiti scene in Brighton, tattooists at work, shoots with burlesque dancers, lingerie clad Ophelia Fancy ladies and innovative portrait work including two images each comprising of over 209 Polaroid’s as a unique and individual portrait. DarkDaze has a cult following and this show confirmed why- bold and dramatic use of colour and a unique style in all his prints, this self taught obsessive photographer confirmed our faith we showed in the raw potential shown in his 2004 competition entry.

Karen Neal
After the visual bonanza of Petrusco came the understated and brilliant show by Karen Neal. Working with a scanner and found objects Karen presented us with a series of images of stunning beauty and incredible detail. We worked with her to produce prints that represented the level of attention that has gone into her though provoking work. This was a relatively small number of prints on display compared to previous expo’s but it was necessary to allow the viewer time to absorb the work and examine what Karen was showing through her deliberate use of an arbitrary machine, a basic flatbed scanner. We could talk for hours about the indiscriminate nature of the techniques used, the ability to render an eye as significant as a leg, or a hair on a torso, but to really make sense of it, go straight to the portfolio now, then come back and read that last bit again… A successful exhibition that was covered in local press and Karen talked exclusively about her work on radio-which we hope to link to soon. Prints are available from the shop and custom built lightboxes but please contact the gallery direct.

Petrusco
What can we say about this visitor from the planet Petrusco? Runner up in the 2006 competition, self styled maverick Pertusco’s May exhibition was our most popular of the year so far, coinciding with the Brighton Fringe festival, and rightly so. The enigmatic and mysterious Petrusco is a major talent, with an eye for visual overload. His work riffs with ideas of satire, consumerism, dislocation, glamour photography and political narrative, all wrapped up with his inventive style and sense of humour. His images demand as much of the viewer as you are willing to engage with- his immediate visual language borrows much from popular culture and media trends but repeated viewing pays off, and the recurrence of certain themes throughout his portfolio, show the true direction of his digital vision. This exhibition showcased his early work with a lo-res camera to the innovative art direction and installation based images made in the month before the show. Shortlisted for the Brighton Festival Fringe Visual Arts Prize and an outstanding first time solo show.
